The H-4 Hercules had an original designation of �HK-1� and was designed by a leading Liberty ship builder, Henry J. Kaiser in cooperation with an aircraft manufacturer, the Hughes Aircraft. The project started during World War II, when the US War Department needed a transport vehicle for supplies to their personnel in UK.
